- Dutch engineering firm Hanab Energy Solutions has acquired Green Frog Connect, one of the UK’s largest independent grid‑connections providers. Hanab specialises in high‑voltage infrastructure up to 380 kV and works with transmission operator TenneT; Green Frog focuses on projects up to 132 kV.
- The partnership aims to accelerate grid upgrades for renewable projects, battery storage, data centres and transport electrification.
- Green Frog will continue operating under its own name but will have access to Hanab’s resources and experience in executing complex high‑voltage projects.
In a move that underscores the importance of grid infrastructure to the energy transition, Dutch firm Hanab Energy Solutions has purchased Green Frog Connect, one of Britain’s largest independent providers of high‑voltage grid connections.
The acquisition will see Green Frog integrate into Hanab’s portfolio while retaining its brand and management. Green Frog is known for designing and delivering grid connections up to 132 kV for renewable projects, battery storage and large industrial customers; it has helped connect more than 3 GW of distributed generation in the UK.
Headquartered in the Netherlands, Hanab specialises in engineering, procurement and construction of high‑voltage electrical systems up to 380 kV and has extensive experience working with transmission operator TenneT.
By combining forces, the companies aim to provide end‑to‑end services for grid connections, from feasibility studies to design, construction and commissioning. Green Frog will gain access to Hanab’s capital and technical expertise, enabling it to take on more complex and larger‑scale projects while continuing to serve UK developers.
According to the announcement, the partnership will prioritise connections for renewable energy projects, battery storage systems, data centres and the electrification of heavy transport. The UK faces a backlog of projects waiting for grid connections, sometimes exceeding five years.
Accelerating these connections is critical to meeting net‑zero targets and supporting the booming AI and cloud‑computing sectors.
Bottleneck relief
Hanab director Guus de Vries said the UK represented a major long-term growth opportunity in electricity infrastructure and energy transition projects, adding: “Green Frog Connect has built an impressive reputation, a highly capable team and a strong strategic position within the UK market. We are excited to support the next stage of the company’s growth.”
Grid connections are the bottleneck of the UK energy transition. The acquisition of Green Frog by Hanab could alleviate some of the backlog by injecting capital, engineering capability and project‑management expertise into the sector.
For renewable developers, faster connections reduce financing costs and enable earlier revenue, while reliable high‑capacity connections are essential to power AI and cloud services without resorting to on‑site gas plants.
However, consolidation also raises questions about competition; regulators must ensure that independent connection providers continue to have a role and that grid development is not dominated by a few large players. Ensuring transparent, fair access to the network will help maintain investor confidence and accelerate the UK’s decarbonisation path.
