The UK’s energy industry is calling on government to prioritise grid connections for flexible data centres, warning that surging electricity demand from artificial intelligence risks overwhelming the power system if unmanaged.
In a new intervention, trade body Energy UK urged ministers to fast-track connections for facilities capable of adjusting their electricity consumption in response to grid conditions.
The proposal reflects mounting concern over the energy implications of the UK’s ambition to become a global leader in AI and digital infrastructure. Data centres are already among the fastest-growing sources of electricity demand, and their consumption profiles are typically inflexible and continuous.
Energy UK argues that this demand could instead be turned into a system asset. By incentivising data centres to operate flexibly – reducing load during peak periods or aligning usage with renewable generation – operators could help balance the grid rather than strain it.
The recommendation highlights a broader shift in how demand is being treated within the energy system. Historically, policy has focused on expanding supply to meet consumption. Increasingly, attention is turning to how demand itself can be shaped, managed and optimised.
