Meta is exploring one of the most ambitious energy solutions yet proposed, signing an agreement to access power from a future space-based solar project to support its growing data centre operations.

The deal involves early-stage plans to develop up to 1 GW of capacity from solar arrays located in space, transmitting energy back to Earth.

While the technology remains largely conceptual, the move reflects the scale of the challenge facing major technology companies. Rapid growth in artificial intelligence and cloud computing is driving a surge in electricity demand, forcing firms to seek new sources of clean, reliable power.

Space-based solar offers theoretical advantages, including continuous generation unaffected by weather or day-night cycles. However, it also presents significant technical, economic and regulatory hurdles.

The concept has been discussed for decades but has yet to be deployed at commercial scale. Key challenges include the cost of launching and maintaining infrastructure in space, as well as the efficiency of transmitting energy back to Earth.

Despite these obstacles, the involvement of major corporations signals growing interest in unconventional solutions. As traditional renewable resources become more constrained – particularly in terms of land availability and grid capacity – companies may increasingly look beyond conventional technologies.

For the energy sector, the development is less about immediate impact and more about direction of travel. The boundaries of what constitutes viable energy infrastructure are expanding, driven by the twin pressures of decarbonisation and digitalisation.

As a major hub for data centres and digital services, the UK will face similar challenges in meeting rising demand while maintaining climate commitments.

In that context, the Meta deal serves as a reminder that the energy transition is not just about scaling existing technologies. It is also about exploring new frontiers – even those that, for now, remain firmly in the realm of possibility rather than reality.
